Last year I spoke of how Harry Potter helped me to be more confident with my reading. Today I chose another work that made an impact in my life.
THIS POST MENTIONS MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES.

Next to Normal is a musical by Brian Yorkey and Tom Kitt. It centers on the life of Diana Goodman--who suffers from bipolar disorder--and her family, and their struggles. The first time I listened to the OBC recording I cried because I could relate. It was one of the first times that I came across a work that addressed mental illness with respect, compassion and that understood what's it like living with one. The characters' issues are relatable. You can't help but sympathize with them.
I love that it brings awareness to mental illnesses without romanticizing or using it as a plot device, the characters are human, they make mistakes, hurt and love. To me this is very important, I could see my struggles with depression reflected and treated kindly, even when it shows the effects it can have in you and your life and those who surround you. How it can take over completely.
The music, each song, capture perfectly the mood of the musical and will stay in your head. This isn't bad, they're brilliant songs 😉
The show is funny, sad, and has twists and turns. Just like life itself. This show has made me feel understood, and like my struggles matter. It made feel strong and heard.
The cast: Alice Ripley, Brian d'Arcy James, Aaron Tveit, Jennifer Damiano, Adam Chanler-Berat and Asa Somers all gave wonderful, strong and compasionate perfomances.
I wish more media portrayed mental health issues in realistic ways, so that we can fight the stigma people with various illnesses face day to day, that's why I think Next to Normal will always be special to me, and will remain being one of my favorite musicals.
